Polishing of a Stainless Steel Part
The customer provides a stamped stainless steel part with a thickness that varies by +/- 0.002” from the nominal. The parts are flat within 0.004” and parallel within 0.002”.
Utilizing a dual lapping machine and free abrasive machining, we flat hone both sides of the parts to the specified thickness of +/- 0.0005”, flatness within +/- 0.0005”, parallelism within +/- 0.0005”, and a surface finish that measures 16 Ra or better.
The customer heat treats the parts and returned them to us for final finishing. We again utilize a dual lapping machine and free abrasive machining to flat hone both sides to the specified thickness of +/- 0.001”, flatness within +/- 0.0004”, and parallelism within +/- 0.0004”. Then, utilizing our polishing equipment, we finished the parts to a surface finish that measures 5 Ra or better.
